A reverse sneeze can happen with any dog breed, but is most common with “flat faced” breeds (boston terriers, pugs, etc.). The dog will tense up, and breathe heavily, looking short of breath. Like how a regular sneeze clears out the nasal passageway, the reverse sneeze clears out the portion behind the nasal cavity that isn’t far enough down the cause a cough.
Reverse Sneeze
This is interview with Dr. Addie Reinhard about reverse sneezing in dogs. Interview Starts at 1:00. They focused on the reverse sneeze specifically in the Boston Terrier dog breed then cover the wider topic of dogs in general. In addition to discussing what a reverse sneeze is they cover what you can do to help your dog if they are having a reverse sneeze.
Example of a reverse sneeze.
Cardalis App - Monitoring your Dog’s Resting Respiratory Rate
This app will help you to measure your dog’s resting respiratory rate and record it as a graph.
The Cardalis app is very user-friendly. When you start, a clock appears, and you tap an icon every time your dog takes a breath. There’s a video that shows the user exactly what to do. After 30 seconds or a minute, it has recorded the number of taps and calculates how many breaths your dog is taking per minute.
If Dr. Leland has recommended this for your dog, you can find the app with the buttons below:
