A reverse sneeze can happen with any dog breed, but is most common with “flat faced” breeds (boston terriers, pugs, etc.). The dog will tense up, and breathe heavily, looking short of breath. Like how a regular sneeze clears out the nasal passageway, the reverse sneeze clears out the portion behind the nasal cavity that isn’t far enough down the cause a cough.
