Rabies is a preventable viral disease most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The rabies virus infects the brain and ultimately causes death.

Did You Know:

• Nearly rabies all cases in the US are due to unvaccinated animals 

• Rabies Vaccinations are legally required by the state of Texas for both dogs and cats by 4 months old. A licensed veterinarian must administer the vaccine, and you must get a signed certificate by said veterinarian as proof. 

  • The first Rabies vaccination is given at 12 weeks of age, and annually from then on. 

  • Legal proof of vaccination is the vaccination certificate signed by your licensed veterinarian. 

At the Pet Vaccination Clinic we have two options for rabies vaccinations. Both come with a rabies tag and a rabies certificate. 

• A 1 year rabies is the most common vaccination plan with the first dose given at 12 weeks of age, and annually from then on. This is typically administered with other common annual vaccinations. 

• A 3 year rabies vaccine is available for dogs and cats that have had at least one yearly Rabies vaccination and are due for a booster.

Rabies is 100% preventable.

• The easiest way to prevent rabies is to keep your pets up to date on their rabies vaccination. 

• If you think you’ve had contact with a rabid animal, clean any open wounds and seek immediate medical attention.

• If your pet kills a bat, skunk or racoon, contact Animal Care Services immediately for information about testing the dead animal for Rabies. 

• Reduce the risk of contact with wildlife or unvaccinated pets.

  • Don’t attract wildlife to your yard with food sources

  • Wild animals accounted for 92.7% of reported cases of rabies in 2018. Bats were the most frequently reported rabid wildlife species, followed by raccoons, skunks, and foxes. Infection by squirrels and possums is rare.
