Do you spell love F-O-O-D? Before you run to the pet store to stock up on treats for your pet, take a quick look in your refrigerator for some of these healthy, nutrient rich snacks. Unlike many dog biscuits and similar treats, these fruit and vegetable options are often lower in calories which can bridge the gap between spoiling your pet, and helping them maintain a healthy weight.
It’s best to start any new treats in small amounts, making sure it agrees with both your pet and their digestive system. And remember, even good foods must have some moderation.
Apples
Slices or chunks are great bite sized treats, but make sure to avoid giving the core and seeds.
Carrots
Baby carrots, or sliced whole carrots make for great snacks. If your pup is missing some teeth, roasted carrots make a great, soft treat.
Green Peas
Frozen or fresh, these make easy small snacks. If your dog is a fan, they make great training treats!
Green Beans
Unseasoned, plain green beans are a great source of fiber.
Watermelon
Make sure to removed the seeds and rind from this sweet, summertime treat.
Bananas
Because of their high sugar content, these are best in moderation.
Broccoli
As long as they’re unseasoned, they can be served in small bits either raw, cooked, or steamed.
Strawberries
Like bananas, these are high in sugar content, so they should be treated more like a desert treat.
